Book I must have been published late in 1934 if not in the following year. A preliminary announcement in the Oban Times, 25 August 1934, stated that it would be published ‘shortly’, being, at present in the hands of the printers’.

Many of the tunes are the compiler’s own compositions or arrangements. They include some transcriptions of Italian bagpipe music. There is also some information from Mr. Simon Fraser, of Warnambool, Australia.

A short biographical notice of the compiler appears in the Piping Times, August 1975. He was a native of Midlothian who emigrated to South Africa. He won several prizes for playing piobaireachds and marches, and taught many pupils, three of whom became pipe-majors. He also played on the fiddle. He died in East London, South Africa, in the 1940s.
