The foreword, signed ‘H. S. Strafford, Hon. Secy. March 1st, 1932’, states that the tunes ‘were selected from 235 which came from all parts of the world in connection with the competition, for the best original march, prompted by the Cowal Highland Gathering Committee in association with the Proprietors of the Scottish Edition of the Daily Express, who generously provided the Prizes.’ The competition was held in 1931, and the book evidently appeared in 1932, since it is mentioned by Askew. It was still available in 1960, but out of print by 1969.
