The dedication begins, ‘To Major J. D. Outram, this collection of new marches, reels, and strathspeys for the bagpipe, selected from the best submitted to the Cowal Highland Gathering Committee for 1920 is respectfully dedicated’, and later continues, ‘The collection embraces the best achievements of over 200 competitors, most of whom have served in the war.’

Two of the tunes are dated 1919; the others are undated.
