1979 Piobaireachd Book Compositions by A G Kenneth.
1979 Archie Kenneth Ceol Beag Compositions and Arrangements by A G Kenneth.
c1980 Second Piobaireachd Book Compositions and Arrangements by A G Kenneth.
1985 A G Kenneth Collection Book 4 by A G Kenneth.
c1991 A G Kenneth Collection Book 5 by A G Kenneth.
Archie Kenneth compiled five books as listed above. Books 4 and 5 are the only ones numbered, however book 3 is called Second Piobaireachd Book. The first advertisement for Books 1 and 2 was in the International Piper magazine where they were called Piobaireachd and Ceol Beag.
p , title; p , foreword and index; p 3, abbreviations; pp 4-15, tunes (9).
- The Author’s Collection. 360mm X 265mm
There is no date but it is advertised for sale in the International Piper Vol 2 No 7, November 1979, page 9. This book and Ceol Beag are both listed in the advertisement but other than the order they are listed there is no indication as to which was considered Book 1 and which was Book 2. The writer has decided that Piobaireachd Book is Book 1 and Ceol Beag is Book 2.
Notes on the tunes can be found in Book 3, Second Piobaireachd Book and in the Piping Times Vol 32 No 10, July 1980, page 18.

First advertised in the International Piper Vol 2 No 7, November 1979, page 9 and reviewed in the Piping Times Vol 32 No 6, March 1980, page 36 by SM. The compiler did not provide the details of the composers or the tunes in this book and the reviewer commented on this. The Piping Times Vol 32 No 10, July 1980, page 18 published ‘Notes on Some of the Tunes in My Book’. These notes cover the tunes in Books 1and 2.

The title-page is identical to the cover except it does not have the printer’s details. There is nothing in the book that helps with dating but there are certain inferences that can be drawn. In the Foreword the compiler refers to this as his ‘second book’ but this is confusing. If we believe this statement then it had to come out after his first Piobaireachd book and before his Ceol Beag book. The latter two books were advertised in the International Piper Vol 2 No 7, November 1979, page 9 and this begs the question, ‘Why was the Second Piobaireachd Book not in the advertisement?’ It is the writer’s guess that he was referring to this as his second Piobaireachd book only.
In an article called ‘Notes on Some of the Tunes in My Book’ in the Piping Times Vol 32 No 10, July 1980, page 18, the compiler writes about tunes in his first Piobaireachd book as well as his Ceol Beag. This implies that at the time of writing only two books existed and this is supported by the fact that when he published his Second Piobaireachd Book he included the ‘Notes of the Tunes in this Book’.
In the ‘Notes of the Tunes in this Book’ Kenneth states that the tune Salute to John MacFadyen was to be included in John MacFadyen’s proposed Book 3. However, MacFadyen’s death in January 1979 prevented this and hence its inclusion in here.
The first four books were printed by Holmes MacDougall Ltd and this offers a prospective dating clue. The Piobaireachd Society Music Committee (of which Archie Kenneth was a member) used this firm for reprinting their 15 volume collection between August 1980 and 1985. (Refer the Piobaireachd Society Collection No 352). It is perhaps that as the Music Committee were using Holmes MacDougall Ltd Kenneth decided to do likewise.
The writer believes this book is number 3 in the series and it was published in 1980 but could have been as late as 1985.

- The Author’s Collection. 175mm X 260mm.
There is nothing in this book that helps date it but it was advertised for sale in the Piping Times Vol 37 No 12, September 1985, page 3. There is one tune dated 1980 and therefore that is the earliest possible date of publication.
1 After 1991.
p , title; p 2, index; p 3. Preface; pp 4-26, tunes (22).
- The Author’s Collection. 296mm X 209mm.
The compiler died 27 July 1989 and his son Iain, in 1990, wrote the Forward to this book. An advertisement in the Piping Times Vol 43, No 11, August 1991, Page 5 lists Book 1-4 only. This suggests Book 5 was not published at that time.
